CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A St. Thomas man was in federal court for a detention hearing after allegedly resisting arrest by peace officers.
Amijah Charles, 36, of Mariendahl, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ruth Miller after his arrest on Friday by federal agents for “assaulting and threatening federal officers,” U.S. Attorney Gretchen C.F. Shappert said.
The Magistrate Judge released Charles on bond following a preliminary and detention hearing, Shappert said.
According to court records, the federal agents were in the area of Mariendahl conducting official business when Charles approached their vehicle and began pounding on the window.
Agents exited the vehicle attempting to place Charles under arrest when he resisted, striking and fighting with the agents.
In a separate matter, Charles was arrested by the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) and charged with second-degree murder in connection with a Contant shooting in August of 2017.
This case is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Everard Potter.
Shappert said that a criminal complaint is merely a formal charging document, and it is not in and of itself evidence of guilt.
“Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law,” she said.
