VIPD: Venezuelan Woman Arrested On Domestic Violence Charges Could Have Immigration Problems, Too

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A South American woman is accused of attacking her boyfriend by scratching, punching and throwing stones at him — but domestic violence charges might be the least of her troubles.

Rocio Esmeralda Cortez Medina, 25, of Venezuela was arrested at her place of employment in Mariendahl at 9:30 p.m. Saturday and charged with simple assault and battery-domestic violence and disturbing the peace-domestic violence, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

No bail was set for Cortez Medina as per the domestic violence law.

At about 2:26 p.m. on Saturday, a “Hispanic male” reported that a former female acquaintance, Cortez Medina assaulted him in Smith Bay, according to the VIPD.

“The Hispanic male reported that Cortez Medina came to his friend’s house where he was staying and started to attack him by punching and scratching him and throwing stones at him and at a window (and) breaking same,” VIPD spokesman Glen Dratte said.

The victim and suspect in this matter are citizens of Venezuela and are illegal immigrants, Dratte said.

“The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) was notified of this case,” he said.

This case is currently under active investigation by the Domestic Violence Unit.
