Man Threatens To Move Out, But When Woman Tells Him His Bags Are Already Packed … He Goes Off

FREDERIKSTED — A St. Croix man threatened to kill himself after being jilted by his lover, but he first damaged items in the apartment and then took what he thought was a lethal dose of “painkillers” and went to sleep on the premises, authorities said.

Carlos Garcia, 47, of Mount Pleasant (West) is charged with destruction of property-domestic violence, according to Superior Court documents.

Garcia was arrested at 11:12 p.m. on July 12 after police said he damaged items in an Mount Pleasant housing community belonging to a female acquaintance, court documents said.

Garcia allegedly damaged a laptop computer, a dressing room table and a mirror, according to court and police sources.

Garcia apparently told the unidentified woman he was moving out of the apartment, but when the woman told him that his things were already packed and downstairs, he flew into a rage and damaged personal items.

According to the woman, Garcia then took an unknown quantity of “painkiller” pills, and then went to sleep in one of the bedrooms in the apartment.

An ambulance was called to attend to Garcia, but he declined to be transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital.

Police responding to the incident noticed the damaged items in the apartment and detained Garcia for questioning, according to a sworn affidavit.

Garcia was then brought to the police station for questioning and gave officers a statement.

No bail was set for Garcia as per the territory’s domestic violence law.

He was remanded to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections pending further court action.

VIPD spokesman Glen Dratte has not responded to multiple requests for information on this incident.
