‘Outsider’ Woman Mowed Down By Hit-And-Run Driver On Backstreet St. Thomas

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — The Virgin Islands Police Department said it was notified of a hit and run incident on the Backstreet in downtown St. Thomas about 9:15 p.m. on Saturday. Sandra Williams, 59, was fatally injured as a result of this incident.

“Please be careful and be mindful and aware of pedestrians when operating your motor vehicles,” Deputy Chief David Cannonier said.

Williams had been known to frequent the Market Square area of St. Thomas. She had no fixed address, according to the VIPD.

Police from the Traffic Bureau are actively investigating this incident and asking anyone that may have seen or have any knowledge of this incident to please contact the VIPD.

Anyone needing to speak to law enforcement can contact the Virgin Islands Police Department in complete confidence at (340) 774-2211 ext. 5617, Major Crime Unit at (340) 714-9830 or the Criminal Investigation Bureau (340) 714-9807.

“We need your help in combating such incidents,” VIPD spokesman Karl Caesar said.

Another report, following Hurricane Hugo in 1989, cited a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) confidential overview that said that over 50 percent of the U.S. Virgin Islands public lives below the poverty line. John please when you are publishing your stories please have it right. If VIPD did not give you an address for your story that does not mean someone is homeless, however Ms. Williams very much had her own house although she might have frequent the Market Square…
