CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Police doing a routine inspection in Hospital Ground found a St. Thomas man with two high-powered rifles and two machine pistols and arrested him on illegal gun charges Wednesday, authorities said.

Kenan Thomas, 32, of Hospital Ground was arrested at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday and charged him with possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and possession of a firearm less than 1,000 feet from a public park, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

“Officers were conducting an inspection in Hospital Ground in the vicinity of Jah Yard when they encountered Thomas, who was in possession of two assault rifles and two semi-automatic handguns,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “He was placed under arrest as a result.”

VIPD officers with the Special Operations Bureau made the arrest of Thomas.

Bail for Thomas was set at $25,000. Unable to post bail, he was turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections pending his Advice of Rights hearing.
