CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Police are investigating the death of a motorcyclist Wednesday night on Weymouth Rhymer Highway on St. Thomas, authorities said.

Denby Dumas, 36, of Agnes Fancy, was traveling eastbound when he lost control near the New Herrnhut Moravian Church and hit the railing on the westbound lane shortly before 9:56 p.m. Wednesday, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

“The rider was thrown into the bushes, while the motorcycle caught fire where it stopped,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “The rider of the motorcycle succumbed to his injuries at the scene.”

The investigation by the VIPD Traffic Investigation Bureau is ongoing.
