CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Police are investigating the death of a man who was spotted floating in the Caribbean Sea between St. Thomas and St. John on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
The 911 Emergency Call Center received a call from a woman on a boat at 3:19 p.m. Monday saying that an “unresponsive male” was pulled out of the sea between Sapphire Beach. St. Thomas and Lovango Cay, St. John, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
When police arrived on the scene, officers found “an unresponsive Black male lying on his back on the back of the vessel,” according to the VIPD.
“A nurse aboard the vessel concluded that the male had no vital signs,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “There was no apparent sign of foul play, but the investigation continues.”
The identity of the male is being withheld until next of kin is notified, Derima said.
The cause of death is undetermined pending an autopsy, he said.
Lovango Cay is a private island off the northwest coast of St. John.
It has an eco-friendly private resort there called: Lovango Resort & Beach Club.
