VIPD Stands Ready To Ensure That Peaceful Celebrations Of New Year’s Eve Are Observed

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — The Virgin Islands Police Department is making it crystal clear that it expects gunfire-free New Year’s Eve celebrations in the territory.

And if you decide not to let your conscience be your guide on Thursday night, you should know that the VIPD’s use of ShotSpotter technology will allow officers to pinpoint where gunfire offenders are — should there be any.

Police Commissioner Trevor Velinor discussed the VIPD New Year’s Eve security plan with Assistant Commissioner Mario Brooks and Deputy Commissioner Celvin Walwyn in the department’s St. Thomas headquarters today.

The VIPD produced a video using police spokesman Toby Derima to get out the message on social media that the department will not tolerate celebratory gunfire this holiday season.

But not everyone was happy with the state of law and order in the territory.

“This entire VIPD “Initative” lacks any teeth at all, and is just babble,” Patrick Deery said on St. Thomas. “These guys are NEVER proactive, and can’t even stop public daylight discharging of firearms. Leadership incompetence, as usual.”
