SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — Despite being down for majority game Wednesday night, Puerto Rico came up victorious against the Virgin Islands, winning 73-69 in Group A’s Round Robin of the Centrobasket Women’s Championship 2021 in El Salvador. Point guard Pamela Rosado led the way for Puerto Rico with 18 points, seven rebounds and eight assists.
While each team traded field goals and kept it close in the first quarter, the U.S. Virgin Islands grew its lead to six points heading into the second half thanks in part to a great rebounding effort by Anisha Briana George, who finished the game with a double-double of 30 points and 15 rebounds.
George dominated the paint, helping her teams secure 21 offensive rebounds. But they could not capitalize on second chance opportunities. Additionally, they were plagued by poor free throwing shooting at 53 percent as well as 18 turnovers, which led to 23 points for Puerto Rico.
Thus, Puerto Rico responded well in the second half while the Virgin Islands struggled to get their offense going. They hope to turn things around against Costa Rica tomorrow.
With one victory under their belt, Puerto Rico looks to secure one of the four qualifying positions for the 2022 Women’s AmeriCup.
