Police Discover Illegal Weapons After Conducting Traffic Stop At Halfpenny

HALFPENNY — Two St. Croix men were arrested on an illegal weapons charge after the Special Operations Bureau and VIPD Marine Unit conducted a traffic stop on the south shore early Thursday afternoon.

Uhura B. George, 24, of Estate Morningstar and Jomoi A. Weeks, ,26, of Castle Burke, were arrested at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

“Officers responding to reports of suspicious activity in the Halfpenny Beach area conducted a traffic stop of a black Honda Accord. During the course of the traffic stop, officers discovered two firearms inside of the vehicle,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said.

A subsequent check was made and neither of the men were licensed to carry firearms. George and Weeks, who were in the vehicle, were both placed under arrest as a result, Derima said.

Bail for George and Weeks was set at $25,000 each. None of the men were able to post bail, and they were subsequently turned over to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections, pending their Advice of Rights hearings.

All individuals listed as arrested or charged with a crime in this report are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
