Routine Traffic Stop For Tinted Windows Leads To Arrest Of 2 Teens On Drug, Gun Charges

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A routine traffic stop for heavily tinted windows led to the arrest of two St. Thomas men on drug and gun charges this weekend, authorities said.

Jamari Gumbs, 18, and Emerson Nicholas, 19, were arrested Friday and charged with constructive possession of ammunition, possession of narcotics with intent to distribute and operating a vehicle without a license, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

Police conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle with heavily tinted windows and an expired registration sticker in the Raphune Hill area at 1:05 a.m. Friday, according to the VIPD.

“Officers approached the car and during the preliminary process, a jar with marijuana was observed in the center console of the vehicle, along with several bags in the front and rear of the vehicle,” VIPD Communications Director Glen Dratte said. “A further search of the vehicle revealed a black pellet gun, live ammunition, grinding tools, and more jars of bagged-out marijuana.”

Bail for Gumbs and Nicolas was set at $15,000. Unable to post bail, they were remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending advice-of-rights hearing.
