Over-Filled Flatbed Truck Tips Over Onto SUV, Injuring 2 People On St. Thomas

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Police are investigating after a flatbed truck carrying a bin filled with dirt tipped over onto an SUV on Monday evening.

It is the second accident involving a service truck and civilians on St. Thomas in less than two months. On July 9, a lift truck overturned on two people, injuring one and killing another.

The 911 emergency operator received a call at 6:17 p.m. Monday, about an auto collision involving a truck that fell onto a vehicle, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

Officers arrived and conducted a preliminary investigation; which revealed that a truck that was transporting a roll on/off garbage bin filled with dirt fell over on its right side onto an SUV, according to the VIPD.

The collision occurred on Turpentine Run Road at the curve near the Nadir basketball
court, VIPD Communications Director Glen Dratte said.

The SUV driver and passenger were both transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center (SRMC) by ambulance to be treated.

Each driver sustained minor injuries from the collision, according to Dratte.

Three quick response vehicles and one heavy rescue appliance from St Thomas Rescue responded to the scene in coordination with the VIPD and VIFEMS.

The VIPD Motor Carrier Safety Unit is currently investigating this accident.
