Cops, searching for murder suspect, find 5.5 kilos of cocaine instead

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Police, acting on a tip, were searching an area of waterfront St. Thomas for a murder suspect last week when they stumbled upon 12 pounds of cocaine instead, authorities said.

The case began on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, when officers with the Virgin Islands Police Department together with other law enforcement agencies responded to an anonymous tip that a wanted homicide suspect was in the area of Annas Retreat, police said.

“Officers conducted inspections in the area of Annas Retreat, however they were unable to locate the suspect,” VIPD spokeswoman Kishma Chichester said. “While conducting inspections, officers discovered a bag containing multiple kilograms of what appeared to be a controlled substance.”

The contents of the bag later tested positive as cocaine and weighed in at 5.5 kilograms. according to police.

The cocaine contraband was turned over to members of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) task force, according to Chichester.
