Former Home Depot employee charged with stealing $1,300 refrigerator

CHRISTIANSTED – A woman is facing criminal charges related to the theft of a $1,300 refrigerator from the Home Depot, authorities said.

Sheba Young, 48, was arrested and charged with grand larceny, embezzlement by employee and conspiracy, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

On December 16, 2024, the Economic Crimes Unit began investigating a complaint filed by The Home Depot in Estate Barren Spot, according to the VIPD.

VIPD mug shot of Sheba Young, 48, of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands.

“The investigation revealed that a former employee identified as Sheba Young was seen on surveillance exiting The Home Depot store with a Whirlpool refrigerator valued at $1,288.00, knowing that she did not pay for the item nor did anyone else,” Kishma Chichester said. “Young then persuaded a co-worker to assist in loading the refrigerator into an accomplice truck.”

As a result of this investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Sheba Young, according to Chichester.

On January 10, 2025, Detectives from the Economic Crimes Unit served Young with an arrest warrant, advised her of her rights, and placed her under arrest without incident, police said.

Young was transported to the Wilbur H. Francis Command Police Station, where he was subsequently booked and processed, according to police.

Bail for Young was set at $35,000.00. Unable to post bail, she was transferred to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections at the John A. Bell Adult Correctional Facility in Golden Grove.

Young is scheduled for an advice-of-rights hearing scheduled in Superior Court on Monday.
