CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A St. Thomas man sought to pay off a $25,500 loan by writing a check in the full amount to the person he owed — on a closed account.
Abraham E. Carty, 58. was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with drawing and delivering worthless checks, two counts of obtaining money by false pretense and two counts of grand larceny, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
The case began on August 14, 2023, when detectives assigned to the Economic Crime Unit began investigating Carty for check kiting, according to the VIPD.

“The investigation revealed that Abraham E. Carty wrote a $25,500.00 check to the complainant on a closed account,” VIPD spokeswoman Kishma Chichester said. “The check was a repayment for money that the complainant loaned to Carty.”
The investigation revealed that Carty received and cashed a $1,500.00 check as a down payment for repairs to the complainant’s residence, according to Chichester.
“After cashing the check Carty never returned to the complainant’s residence to complete the repairs,” she said.
On February 16, 2024, the Superior Court issued an arrest warrant for Abraham E. Carty’s arrest. police said.
Carty turned himself in to officers at the Richard Callwood Command at 10:25 a.m. Tuesday, according to police. Carty was placed under arrest at that time.
Bail for Carty was set at $35,000.00. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections pending an advice-of-rights hearing.
