Man struck and killed by train in Pompano Beach

A Brightline train struck and killed a man who was walking along the railroad tracks in Pompano Beach Monday night, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Steve Collier, 62, was hit around 6:30 p.m. in the area of 300 South Dixie Highway in Broward County, according to the BSO. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics declared Collier dead.

The sheriff’s office has not released the man’s identity. BSO detectives are investigating the incident.

An investigation by the Miami Herald and WLRN showed that Brightline is the deadliest passenger railroad in the United States.

The Pompano Beach fatality brings the Brightline death toll in Florida to 191 since 2017, with 165 of those deaths in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, according to a tally by the Miami Herald.

Pompano Beach has been the site of 17 fatalities, most of them pedestrians, reporters found. Two weeks ago, on October 22, Brian Baker, 63, was killed when a Brightline train hit him in Pompano Beach. The accident happened around 2 a.m.

So far this year, 28 people have died after being struck by Brightline trains. In Broward, the trains travel at a speed of 79 mph and do not slow down when going through neighborhoods.
