GEORGETOWN — The National Disaster Management Agency in Grenada, has raised the alert level for the underwater volcano, Kick ‘em Jenny from yellow to orange because the activities have increased.
The agency says it has been working with the Trinidad-based Seismic Research Center of the University of the West Indies in monitoring the situation and with this increase in the alert level, ships and other marine operators must obey a 3.1 miles exclusion zone.
In May last year, the disaster agency warned Grenadians that they should expect more eruptions of the underwater volcano.
It noted then that volcanic episodes at Kick em’ Jenny usually consist of several eruptions lasting over several days before returning to repose.
The disaster agency said people in coastal areas should lookout for unusual material that might be ejected during the eruption.
An orange alert means that highly elevated levels of seismic and/or fumarolic activity or other unusual activity has been observed and that an eruption may begin with less than 24 hours’ notice.
However, authorities will remain in close contact with authorities in Grenada and the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Center in Trinidad for relevant updates which will be shared with the public.
