FREDERIKSTED —They say good things happen in threes.

So it should be no surprise to anyone that the University of North Texas basketball team now has three Virgin Islanders on its team.

The former St. Croix Educational Complex High School star Shakeem Alcindor signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Mean Green on Wednesday.

“We are thrilled to have Alcindor as part of the North Texas basketball family,” North Texas head coach Grant McCasland said. “He is a tremendous talent and great person. He works extremely hard and his rapid development points to his potential as an impact player.”

Alcindor, a 6-foot, 8-inch forward, is the third Virgin Island player to sign on at North Texas, located in Denton, Texas. St. Thomas native Jahmiah Simmons, a 6-foot, 4-inch forward, is a redshirt sophomore on the men’s team and St. Croix native Anisha George, a 6-foot, 2-inch forward, just signed on to play on the Mean Green’s women’s team.

Alcindor led the St. Croix Educational Complex High School to the Interscholastic Athletic Association league title here his senior year before moving on to Link Year Prep in Branson, Missouri. The Lions won the Central Post-Grad League title at 14-0 and finished the season 35-8 overall.

“My friend Shakeem Alcindor has no idea how good he can be!” said Link Year Prep coach Adam Doynes on Twitter.

The University of North Texas is an NCAA Division I program that plays in Conference USA.
