CHRISTIANSTED — A major electrical service interruption is affecting the island of St. Croix, the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority (WAPA) said.
All generation capacity at the Estate Richmond Power Plant was lost at approximately 8:14 a.m. during attempts to restore service to a feeder which tripped earlier in the day.
WAPA said about 3,045 customers on St. Croix Feeder 6A were experiencing a power outage since early this morning.
“The interruption occurred at 6:03 a.m. and inclement weather now being experienced on St. Croix is delaying a line crew being dispatched to determine the cause of the service interruption,” WAPA said. “Once crews are deployed, they will determine the cause of the interruption, make any necessary repairs and restore service to the affected customers.”
WAPA said at 2:30 p.m. today that its line crews are making repairs to downed lines near the Schjang ball park in Estate St. John.
“The downed lines are the cause of a service interruption on Feeder 6A affecting more than 3,000 customers,” WAPA said. “Once the crews complete repairs, service will be restored to all affected customers. Service restoration is expected by 3:30 p.m.”
Earlier in the day, WAPA was able to reconnect some of its customers on the Big Island.
“Electrical service has been restored to customers on St. Croix with the exception of those on Feeders 6A and 10A following a island-wide service interruption earlier today,” WAPA said at 10:46 a.m. “Line crews are making repairs to damaged lines on both feeders.”
Readers of the Virgin Islands Free Press in Frederiksted said on Facebook that their electricity was still off as of 1:45 p.m. today.
For customers on the East End of St. Croix, the power was off from about 8:16 a.m. to 10:10 a.m. — nearly two full hours.
“All efforts are being made to restore service at the power plant and eventually to all customers,” WAPA said.
