CHRISTIANSTED — A St. Croix man who cashed his $1,200 stimulus check twice — by using a phone app for it before he took it to his bank — has been arrested by police after being extradited from Florida on check kiting charges.
Dennis Hospedales, 47, of Estate Barren Spot, was arrested at 2:52 p.m. today and charged with obtaining money by false pretenses, grand larceny, and drawing and delivering worthless checks, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
“The investigation into this matter revealed that on June 2, 2020 Hospedales knowingly and maliciously deposited his Economic Stimulus check using an application on his mobile phone into his bank account, then subsequently presented the check to a bank and cashed it,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said.
Hospedales was placed under arrest by local authorities after being extradited from Orlando, Florida, Derima said.
Bail for Hospedales was set at $50,000. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections pending an advice-of-rights hearing.
