CHARLOTTE AMALIE — At a time when recovery and rebuilding remain a top priority for the territory, the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) said it is pleased to announce that a new recruit class has begun training at the Police Academy.
This is the first group of recruits to train since Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated the Virgin Islands last fall.
Classes started on St. Thomas on April 23 and on St. Croix on May 1. In June, there will be an even larger group of recruits beginning training, said VIPD’s Public Information Officer Glenn Dratte.
The Academy has instituted new and additional curriculum to include Peace Officers Standards and Training certification.
VIPD contictively recruit qualified individuals to join the Department. Governor Kenneth Mapp recently announced that the starting salary for officers has been increased to $40,953 with health insurance and other benefits.
