CHRISTIANSTED — Virgin Islands Attorney General Claude Walker has been asked to give an emergency legal opinion ahead of Tuesday’s Board of Elections meeting.
Board of Elections member Jevon Williams, the Minority Caucus leader, requested the emergency legal opinion in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling that the defunct district and joint boards of elections were unlawfully meeting and transacting business.
The question posed to Walker from Williams, R-St. Croix, is as follows: “Must the Board of Elections reconsider actions taken by thedefunct boards, including, but not limited to, motions and resolutions transacted during meetings of the board or its committees; the adoption of rules, procedures and motions for the governance of the
Election System of the Virgin Islands or the administration ofelections within the territory; and the expenditure of funds or human resources/personnel matters?”
The Minority Caucus consists of Williams and Board of Elections member Robert Max Schanfarber, R-St. Thomas. Harriet Mercer, R-St. Thomas, will join upon taking the oath of office.
