FREDERIKSTED — About one hour after high noon one St. Croix man was killed and another man injured in a shootout near Harvey Project in Estate Profit this afternoon.

Concerned citizens called 911 Emergency Call Center and reported a discharging of shots in Bethlehem Village Housing Community (Harvey Project) Estate Profit about 12:59 today.

When police arrived they discovered an unresponsive male victim with multiple gunshot wounds to the body; Medical Attendants on the scene was unable to locate any vital signs on the victim.

Akeem Herbert, 28, succumbed to his injuries sustained by gunshot wounds and was identified by next of kin, the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD) said.

Officers also discovered another male victim who was shot to lower body and was transported by ambulance to the Juan F. Luis Hospital. The victim was immediately taken into surgery, according to the VIPD.

Herbert and another man were accused by police of stealing a woman’s cell phone at gunpoint near the Christiansted Cemetery in March 2017.

Herbert was also accused of domestic violence and the VIPD put out a wanted poster on him in June 2015.

The incident is current under active investigation by Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB).
