VIPD: St. Croix’s Efrain Rivera, 74, Dies From Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound in Mon Bijou

FREDERIKSTED — A St. Croix man apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Mon Bijou early this morning.

Efrain Rivera, 74, was identified by police as the man who died from an apparent suicide sometime before 7 a.m. today, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

Police from the Wilbur Francis Command made contact with Efrain’s common law wife,  who stated that she got out of bed and walked into the living room when she discovered her husband unresponsive bleeding from his head, with a gun on his lap, according to the VIPD.

Upon arrival at the home officers observed an adult Hispanic male (Rivera) sitting on a chair in the living room with, what appeared to be a gunshot wound to head.

A check of the surrounding area was made for any witnesses, suspects and evidence with negative results.

The incident is under active investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB).
