CHRISTIANSTED — An elderly man trying to cross the Christiansted Bypass at twilight was struck down dead by a passing motorist this weekend, authorities said.

A vehicle traveling west on the Christiansted Bypass near the Peter’s Farm Condominiums hit a pedestrian crossing the roadway about 6:15 p.m. Saturday, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

The pedestrian, a 70-year-old white man, was transported to the Juan Luis Hospital & Medical Center via ambulance, but later succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the accident, according to the VIPD.

“His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said.

This incident is under active investigation by the VIPD Traffic Investigation Bureau.
