St. John Man Who Returned Rental Car Linked To Shooting Arrested By Police

CRUZ BAY — A St. John man who returned a rental car observed fleeing the scene of a shooting was arrested Wednesday afternoon on assisting in the commission of a crime charges, authorities said.

Hasani Liburd, 27, of Enighed was arrested at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday and charged with accessory after the fact, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

“Liburd was observed returning a rental car used to flee the scene of a shooting in Cruz Bay on June 2,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said.

Liburd said that he was paid to return the vehicle to the rental agency, but refused to cooperate any further with detectives, according to Derima.

He was placed under arrest for alleged involvement in the shooting incident.

Bail for Liburd was set at $1,000. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the custody of the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections pending an advice-of-rights hearing.

This case is currently under active investigation.
