St. Thomas Fugitive Arrested On Murder Warrant In North Carolina 2 Months Ago Is Returned To The Territory

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — After being arrested two months ago in North Carolina, a St. Thomas man was taken into official custody by officers of the Virgin Islands Police Department in Durham on Friday, authorities said.

Jabaar Mactavious, 29, of Estate Tutu, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault, third-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, use a firearm during the commission a crime and unauthorized possession of ammunition, according to the VIPD.

“Mactavious was identified as the individual who shot and killed Shaq’Kil Roberts on April 16 in Tutu Valley,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said.

Mactavious was arrested June 17 by North Carolina police officers in Durham for being a fugitive from justice on a warrant filed out of St. Thomas.

He was transported to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility on St. Croix because the St. Thomas jail has been closed to new prisoners due to an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Charlotte Amalie facility, Derima confirmed to the Virgin Islands Free Press this morning.

St. Thomas/St. John Chief of Police Steven Phillip thanked those residents who gave tips to the VIPD to assist in making this arrest.

“We appreciate support of our community and everyone who told us what they knew about this incident. Continue to use your voice to say something if you see something,” Chief Phillip said.
