CHRISTIANSTED — The Health Department said the territory’s 24th death due to COVID-19 happened over the weekend.
“After further investigating cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the territory’s 24th death related to COVID-19.
“The deceased is a 78-year-old female on St. Croix,” according to a news release issued by Health Department spokeswoman Jahnesta Ritter.
Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion said the unnamed victim died on Saturday.
The Virgin Islands Department of Health website today still listed the territory as having only 23 deaths.
The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA) which alerts the public of COVID-19 deaths — issued no such message this past weekend.
Prominent St. Croix real estate broker Greg Hamilton was the 23rd person to die of COVID-19 in the territory in November 2020.
Health said it is doing its best to halt the spread of COVID-19 in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
“Please continue to follow these precautionary measures: stay at home, practice social distancing, wear a mask when in company of others outside of those in your household, clean frequently used areas thoroughly, and wash your hands often with soap and warm water,” Ritter said.
