FREDERIKSTED — Police are investigating after a 49-year-old woman was shot and killed at a housing project in St. Croix on Monday night.
Edna Smith, of St. Croix, was positively identified by a family member as the homicide victim, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.
VITEMA 911 dispatchers were notified starting at 8:16 p.m. by the ShotSpotter detection system that multiple shots were fired in the Louis E. Brown Apartment complex in Frederiksted, according to the VIPD.

The dispatchers got reports from several citizens immediately after ShotSpotter reporting multiple shots fired and that a female sustained a gunshot wound, police said.
VIPD officers and Emergency Medical Technicians responded to the location and discovered an unresponsive female (Smith) lying on the sidewalk by the parking area, according to police.
The medical attendants confirmed that Smith did not have any signs of life. police said.

This homicide remains under active investigation.
