FREDERIKSTED – A 54-year-old woman was struck and killed on the Queen Mary Highway in Estate Plessen on Saturday night, Virgin Islands Police said.
Emergency 911 dispatchers directed Traffic Investigation Bureau officers shortly after 7:17 p.m. to investigate a collision involving a pedestrian, which occurred on Queen Mary Highway Route 70 in the vicinity of the Market Supermarket in Frederiksted, according to the VIPD.
Responding officers’ preliminary investigation revealed that prior to the crash the pedestrian was walking on the shoulder of the westbound lane, then crossed the roadway from south to north and began walking eastbound in the eastbound lane when she was struck from behind, police said.
The pedestrian was later identified at the scene by her next of kin as Christina Finney, according to police.
After the impact with the pedestrian, Christina Finney, the driver, who is unknown at this
time, exited his vehicle, and looked at Ms. Finney’s body on the ground,” VIPD spokeswoman Sakeeda Freeman said. “The individual then went back into his truck and drove away from the scene of the crash.”
No one reported being involved in a collision with a pedestrian at 911 or to any police station in the St. Croix District that evening, according to Freeman.
Finney’s body, after impact, was thrown into the air and landed approximately twenty-four feet from the area of impact, eastward onto the northern shoulder of the eastbound lane, police said.
The attending Emergency Room physician that night was Dr. David Fairbanks at the Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital, according to police.
“Dr. Fairbanks stated that Ms. Finney sustained multiple blunt-force trauma to the body and experienced respiratory and cardiac arrest,” Freeman said.
Dr. Fairbanks indicated that Finney’s time of death was at approximately 8:31 p.m., according to police.
“There is no conclusive information on the driver or the vehicle at this time,” Freeman said. “However, the vehicle the VIPD is still looking for should have damage to the front left side of the vehicle.”
The vehicle is dark in color with an extended cab, according to Freeman.
The make and model are unknown at this time.
This case will remain open and under investigation by the Virgin Island Police Department Traffic Investigation Bureau, St. Croix District.
