Cops arrest man accused of leaving scene of accident where pedestrian was injured

FREDERIKSTED — Virgin Islands Police arrested 48-year-old Ronel D. Burke Saturday after authorities say he was involved in a car crash late last year.

Burke was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, operating a motor vehicle in a negligent manner, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle on a public road, according to the VIPD.

The charges stem from a hit-and-run incident involving a pedestrian that occurred on November 22, 2024, resulting in injuries to a pedestrian, VIPD spokeswoman Kishma Chichester said.

Officers executed an arrest warrant on Burke at 11:17 a.m. Saturday at his residence without incident, police said.

Burke was transported to the Wilbur H. Francis Command Police Station where he was advised of his Miranda Rights, according to police.

The suspect was processed and subsequently released after posting bail for $555.00, which constituted 10% of the total bail set at $5,500.00 as indicated in the arrest warrant, police said.

Burke’s condition of release was that it is mandatory he appear in court for his advice-of-rights
hearing.
