ROAD TOWN, Tortola — Some BVI residents in Anegada were jolted from their sleep by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake early this morning.
The moderate earthquake, which took place at a depth of 24 miles (40 kilometers) occurred at approximately 2.58 a.m. today, the United States Geological Survey said.
The tumbler’s epicenter was located at Latitude: 18.934 north and Longitude: 64.363 west, the USGS said.
The quake registered 13.67 miles (22.09 km) north of Anegada, 31 miles (50 km) north of Virgin Gorda, and 121 miles (196 km) east-northeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, according to the Puerto Rico Seismic Network.
There was no Tsunami warning, advisory, or watch issued for the British or U.S. Virgin Islands.
Besides the BVI, affected countries included: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, Saint Barthelemy, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, Venezuela, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Caribbean Netherlands.
