VIFREEP EXPLAINER: Will the Golden Dome Protect My Home in the Virgin Islands?

By V.I. FREEP STAFF

CHRISTIANSTED — You’ve seen the President’s posts about a “Golden Dome” in the sky, but what does it mean for a family in Frederiksted or a business owner in Charlotte Amalie?

At the V.I. Free Press, we’ve decoded the technical jargon to bring you the “Platinum Standard” truth about our safety.

1. It’s an Umbrella, Not a Wall The Golden Dome doesn’t sit on the ground like a fence. It is a network of thousands of satellites that “sees” threats the moment they launch from anywhere on Earth. If a threat is detected, it is intercepted in space—miles above the atmosphere—keeping the Caribbean safe and clear.

2. The ‘Guam Blueprint’ Currently, the U.S. is testing this technology in Guam to prove it can protect islands. Once the Pacific tests are complete, the same “shield” will be active over the USVI.

3. No Cost to Locals Unlike the $61 billion bill being handed to Canada, the USVI’s protection is already funded. As Americans, our “Platinum Standard” of safety is a right, not a bill.

VIFREEP Service Tip: As the system develops, residents may notice increased Coast Guard activity and new high-speed satellite communications infrastructure. This is all part of the “Dome” coming online to keep the Territory the safest place in the Atlantic.

“The V.I. Free Press: Looking out for the Territory, from the street corner to the stars.”
