ST. CROIX — The sudden, violent deaths of 25-year-old Delli Eduardo and his 30-year-old brother, Yordani, outside La Terraza Bar and Restaurant early Sunday morning have unleashed an intense wave of public reaction online. The fatal shooting came just 34 days after the Superior Court dismissed all felony charges against Delli Eduardo with prejudice—exonerating his bail and wiping his legal slate completely clean.
For many residents, the double homicide—which pushed the territory’s body count to 30 for the year—is being viewed as a direct result of a judicial system that leaves victims and communities feeling unprotected and unheard.
A Breakdown in Faith in the Courts
In the hours following the report, online discussions leaned heavily toward themes of vigilante intervention and local institutional frustration.
“It is evident Street Justice is winning,” wrote commenter Kyshama Belardo. “Because the government lets them out and the streets puts them in the ground.”
Others echoed the sentiment that when serious legal charges—ranging from assault to child abuse—are thrown out in court, community reprisal steps into the void.
“When the system fails you get vigilantism,” noted Brad Bridges. Former teacher Rané Rawlins questioned whether a lack of victim cooperation or evidentiary hurdles led to the initial case dismissal, while pointing out the broader cycle of violence gripping the island’s youth.
Family Grief vs. Public Cynicism
While a portion of the public expressed cynicism over the timing of the shooting, family members and former mentors shared grief over the loss of two young lives.
“Waoooo last night they said goodbye to me with a big hug and a kiss, both of them, and look now… how it hurts me and even more for their mother,” shared Sarap Castillo.
Family members like Doris Garcia lamented the heavy emotional toll on the surviving relatives, writing, “Gosh, I wish it were a lie… they are like my children, they have my heart.”
Yet, for every message of condolence, others warned of the broader toll this cycle of street justice inflicts on the territory’s economic future and public safety. Former resident Joan Macdermott Fitzgerald pointed out that unchecked reprisal destroys the island’s reputation and long-term stability, writing, “That sadly is why the violence continues and tourism and ships that support that beautiful island will be destroyed.”
Police Appeal for Information
As public debate continues to rage over accountability and the effectiveness of local prosecution, law enforcement officials remain focused on finding those responsible for the pre-dawn barrage of gunfire in Castle Coakley.
