CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A “major” power outage was affecting three of the four major U.S. Virgin Islands since early this morning, the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said.
The outage “is a result of the loss of generation capacity at the Randolph Harley Power Plant,” WAPA said. “Plant personnel are working to rebuild generation capacity ahead of restoring service to the affected customers.”
About six hours ago, WAPA said the electric outage was affecting “all customers”in St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island and Hassel Island.
The “service interruption” began at approximately 1:35 a.m. when the Randolph Harley Power Plant “lost all generation capacity,” WAPA said.
Restoration was underway at 2:31 a.m. with customers on Feeders 5A, 6A, 7A, 9B, and 10B back on line, according to WAPA.
“All customers will be restored as generation capacity builds at the power plant,” the authority said.
Earlier WAPA said 25 customers on a portion of Feeder 7B would suffer blackout conditions today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“During this period, contractor crews will make permanent repairs to the electric grid in the vicinity of Oswald Harris Court housing community and Estate Thomas,” WAPA said.
