TALE OF TWO STORMS: Tropical Storm Dorian Hits St. Croix In A.M., Then Hurricane Dorian Strikes St. Thomas-St. John In P.M.

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Maybe for the first-time ever, a “minor” storm has had its eye zigzag directly over the two major U.S. Virgin Islands in one day.

The National Hurricane Center said that the center of Tropical Storm Dorian passed directly over St. Croix about 8 a.m. today. Then, CNN reported that the center of intensified now Hurricane Dorian passed over St. Thomas about 4 p.m. today.

“The storm’s center was near the island of St. Thomas around 4 p.m. ET, with maximum sustained winds of around 75 mph, just above minimum hurricane strength,” the National Hurricane Center said.

At 8:00 a.m. Atlantic Standard Time, the center of Tropical Storm Dorian was located near latitude 17.1 North, longitude 64.1 West (over St. Croix), according to the NHC in Miami.

St. Croix is located at 17.7246° N, 64.8348° W.

The storm then gained strength and headed northwest for St. Thomas and St. John.
