St. John Man Fights Off Armed Robber Wearing Ski Mask Early Tuesday: VIPD

CRUZ BAY — A St. John man was able to fight off an armed robber who tried to rob him of his jewelry late Tuesday, authorities said.

Police officers were dispatched to the Myra Keating Smith Clinic in St. John about 1:54 a.m. Tuesday in reference to a gunshot victim, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

“Investigation revealed that the victim was walking to his residence when an unknown individual wearing a black ski mask attempted to rob him of his jewelry at gunpoint,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “A physical altercation ensued between the victim and the suspect for the weapon, and a single gunshot went off, injuring the victim.”

The suspect fled the scene on foot, police said.

“The victim sustained one gunshot wound in the incident, and he is in stable condition at this time,” Derima said.

This case is currently under active investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB).
