CHARLOTTE AMALIE — An angry mob descended upon a St. Thomas man who complained that he paid cash for marijuana to someone near a Smith Bay convenience store, but the drug dealer never returned with the illegal product, authorities said.

A concerned citizen called the 911 Emergency Call Center to report that a man was assaulted in Smith Bay in the vicinity of Lake’s Chicken Fry about 4:24 p.m. Friday, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

“Police contacted the victim at the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital, where he reported that while in the area of Louie’s Market he agreed to purchase marijuana and he gave a male money in exchange for the marijuana,” VIPD spokesman Toby Derima said. “The male left the area and did not produce the substance.”

The then-uninjured man subsequently asked a group of people about the man who took his money — and the group proceeded to assault him, according to Derima.

The victim was transported to the hospital via ambulance, where he received treatment for a laceration to the head.

Meanwhile, there was little sympathy on social media for the unidentified injured man who complained to anyone who would listen that he had been ripped off in an illegal drug purchase.

“Dumb ass !!!!” said Lawrence A. Creque on Facebook tonight.
