Australian Government Goes Extra Mile To Help Its Citizens In ‘Times Of Need’ When In USVI

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Police Commissioner Ray Martinez participated in a meeting led by the VITEMA Director Daryl Joschen at VITEMA headquarters in St. Thomas on Friday.

The meeting was with representatives of the Australian Consulate-General’s Office based out of New York.

The purpose of the meeting was to establish government support for Australian nationals in the territory during times of need.

Also in the meeting were Tourism Commissioner Joe Bochulte and VITEMA Assistant Director Barbara Petersen.

In Australia’s Consular Services Charter it states that its help is contingent upon its citizens obeying the laws of the land where they are overseas.

The Australian Consulate-General’s office in New York promotes Australia’s interests in the northeastern United States and provides consular, passport and notarial services to Australians located in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Ohio, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

John F. McCarthy is a veteran journalist in the Caribbean, writing from the "Decision Space" where survival meets the surreal. His reporting steel was tempered by a lineage of legendary editors and broadcasters, including Ed Wynn Brant (The Bomb), Owen Eschenroder (Ann Arbor News), Lynelle Emanuel (BVI Beacon), and Charles Thanas (WSVI-TV). Alongside longtime colleague Kenneth C. "Casey" Clark, McCarthy has navigated the front lines of the territory’s history—from the 1997 volcanic "snow" to every major hurricane since Hugo. Known for leaning out of doorless helicopters to capture the "money shot," McCarthy now edits the V.I. Free Press, providing the essential link between the island's colonial past and its SpaceX future.
