2 tourists struck by red-light running driver in St. Thomas

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — Two tourists were struck by a speeding hybrid car that police say ran a red light in St. Thomas on Wednesday afternoon, Virgin Islands Police said.

Emergency dispatchers alerted police shortly after 1:42 p.m. that an automobile had collided with pedestrians on William G. Lewis Lane near Lucinda A. Millin Home in Charlotte Amalie, according to the VIPD..

“The incident involved two tourists, male and female, who were struck by a moving vehicle,” VIPD spokeswoman Kishma Chichester said.

While the pedestrians waited at the crosswalk on William G. Lewis Lane, and due to the
absence of a pedestrian control device on the southwest corner of Lucinda A. Millin Home,
they observed that traffic in all directions came to a stop, and that it was safe to walk on the
crosswalk, according to Chichester.

As they began to cross the road, a white 2023 Toyota Prius traveling from west to east on De Beltjen Road, made a left turn on the red traffic light onto William G. Lewis Lane without stopping and collided with the pedestrians, police said.

The impact of the crash caused each individuals to become airborne, according to police.

Each victim was transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center for treatment.

“The male sustained abrasions on both elbows, his right shoulder and experienced pain on the
right side of the neck,” Chichester said. “The female sustained a hairline fracture to her right hip, abrasions on the right side of her face and arm, and an abrasion to her left palm.”

Each visitor was treated at the St. Thomas hospital and released, she said.
