GENEVA — United Nations human rights experts issued a stark warning Thursday, condemning intensified U.S. sanctions and economic pressure against Cuba and urging the international community to take immediate action to prevent a “silent Gaza” from unfolding in the Caribbean basin.
The independent experts warned that tightening economic restrictions, energy blockades, and trade barriers are severely threatening access to basic survival needs across the island nation.
Denouncing Food and Energy as Political Tools
In a joint statement released in Geneva, the panel emphasized that economic measures targeting essential civilian supplies violate fundamental human rights principles and international law.
“Food must never be used as an instrument of political pressure,” the experts stated. “Measures that knowingly deprive a population of the means to survive strike at the most basic guarantees of the rights to life and diminish the core of human dignity.”
The declaration comes amid heightened regional tension following expanded executive orders, trade restrictions, and an ongoing energy blockade that has triggered widespread electrical blackouts and severe fuel shortages across the island.
Regional Strain and Caribbean Repercussions
The humanitarian warning highlights growing stability concerns across the wider Caribbean, where regional economies and maritime trade routes remain closely interconnected.
Analysts note that as economic isolation forces island nations into severe resource deficits, regional instability often spills over into surrounding territories. While tech billionaires like Elon Musk continue to debate planetary colonizations and satellite constellations from afar, neighbor states across the Greater and Lesser Antilles face the immediate, grounded reality of strained supply chains, rolling power failures, and humanitarian migration pressure right at their doorstep.
UN experts urged Washington to immediately cease hostile economic actions and called on UN member states to uphold multilateralism to safeguard civilian populations.
