CHARLOTTE AMALIE — St. Thomas entrepreneur Robert “Max” Schanfarber will take the oath of office at 9 a.m. today in the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands to become a member of the Board of Elections.

Schanfarber, a Republican, was appointed and certified, pursuant to V.I. elections law, by Supervisor of Elections Caroline Fawkes to fill a vacancy.

Schanfarber and Harriet Mercer will take the two vacant seats, after Lawrence Boschulte declined to be seated.

Administering the oath of office will be Presiding Judge Michael C. Dunston.

“I pledge to do the people’s work in an ethical, honest and transparent manner,” Schanfarber said. “My first priority is protecting our most fundamental right by guaranteeing a free, fair and honest election.”

Schanfarber will remain secretary of the Republican Party of the United States Virgin Islands.

As a member of the Virgin Islands delegation to the 2016 Republican National Convention, Schanfarber gained national attention for his service on the Rules Committee after he successfully fought to ensure the voice of the five U.S. territories remained equal with the voice of the 50 states and District of Columbia in the selection of the GOP
presidential and vice presidential nominees.

At this time, Schanfarber has no further comment.
