Man killed near Glynn restaurant

KINGSHILL — Police are investigating after a 45-year-old man was killed near a Glynn restaurant in St. Croix early this morning.

Rey Enrique Romero of St. Croix was positively identified by a family member as the deceased, the Virgin Islands Police Department said.

The case began at 5:22 a.m. today, when the ShotSpotter detection system alerted to shots fired near in Estate Glynn, according to the VIPD.

Officers were dispatched to the Glynn area in question, but found nothing initially, police said.

At 8:44 a.m., a concerned citizen reported a man down in an adjacent vacant lot near The
Crab Queen restaurant in Estate Glynn, according to police.

“Responding officers observed a Hispanic male with what appeared to be gunshot wounds about his body,” VIPD spokeswoman Kishma Chichester said.

The male victim was identified on the scene by next of kin as Romero, according to Chichester.

The death marks the territory’s second homicide reported so far this year, including one on St. Croix and one on St. Thomas.

There has also been one officer-involved shooting death on St. Croix.

The investigation into this homicide remains open.
